What is Augmented Reality?
In today’s modern world we have a plethora of new technologies at our fingertips. Never before have we had so many different technologies to enhance our lives and enjoyment. One such technology that is becoming hugely popular is augmented reality. This article looks at what augmented reality is and how it is being used in society and business today:
How does Augmented Reality technology work?
The actual definition of augmented reality is as follows: “an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device (such as a smartphone camera); also: the technology used to create augmented reality”
As we can see, at its most basic, augmented reality involves adding computer generated 3D images into a real-life video image. For example, an augmented reality game could impose 3D characters to appear in your living room or the streets. So you take a real-world environment using standard video recording functionality and overlay computer-generated images into this environment to create a blend of reality and virtual reality. This differs from virtual reality itself as virtual reality allows us to see fully-crafted computer-generated world and images – you cannot see the real world when using a virtual reality app or game.
In recent years this technology has progressed greatly and it is now seeing a wide variety of commercial uses both in the entertainment and business industries.
What uses does Augmented Reality have?
As mentioned above, augmented reality now has many real-world applications. Developers are realizing the potential of both augmented and virtual reality and are jumping on the bandwagon to present us with some awesome new creations.
Augmented reality is perfectly suited for gaming. We have seen a superb array of games that include augmented reality technology. Popular examples of augmented reality games include the hugely successful Pokemon Go, Real Strike, and Zombies Run. Real Strike allows you to run around the streets engaging in FPS combat whilst Zombies Run combines running with epic zombie apocalypse gameplay!
Medical science is continually evolving and augmented reality can play a key part in its development. Doctors and nurses can use augmented reality to improve their practices, for example, a doctor could refer to an augmented image of a human body superimposed over an actual patient to help them easily identify problem areas, or particular veins and arteries during surgery.
Another industry making use of augmented reality is engineering. Engineering and manufacturing can benefit from this technology – for example, engineering companies could use augmented reality to visualize machinery parts and how they fit together. Manufacturing companies could also use AR technology to look at potential factory layouts for example.
As you can see, augmented reality technology can be truly ground-breaking. As this technology improves and becomes widely available, we should only see an increase in its usage in modern society. Furthermore, we should see it being implemented in a variety of new and exciting ways.
